An interesting technology to take note of is called LoRa (short for Long Range). This technology allows one device to communicate with another device in a range of up to 3 miles in an urban area up to 10 miles away in a rural area.
You can purchase a LoRa chip and antenna and use it with either its own screen and keyboard as a stand-alone device or can be added to a phone or pc. There are open-source frameworks and software for LoRa that can be utilized.
If you use this with a phone or pc, really you are just saving from having to purchase a monitor and keyboard. The actual LoRa transmission does not use the cell phone network and does not use the internet. It is a wireless encrypted communication that is sent from device to device. A usb based LoRa module and antenna can be purchased for around $25. LoRa uses AES based encryption and only devices with the same private key can communicate with each other.
Tip: Don’t use the default channel, which could allow others to intercept your messages / data.
Analysis:
As a targeted individual, it’s interesting to think about technology like this both as a tool we could use and as something in the hands of those targeting us.
As a tool for targeted individual use, this could be very helpful in having a way to communicate within that 3-10 mile range without the use of a cell phone network or even internet connection. This could be useful in organizing events and in communicating with those that live in nearby areas. It could also be useful for those people whose phone is heavily hacked to have some method of communicating with others in a local area. And there is no monthly fee, the module and antenna is a one-time purchase and the airwaves are free.
As something that could be used by those targeting us (and yes the military and intelligence community has access to technology like this), it is helpful to consider this technology. It is off-grid so it leaves no trace in any internet based ‘traceroute’ command, leaves no log in a router or firewall, leaves no record in the telecommunication system whatever. And keep in mind this type of communication can be paired to a phone, used in a computer, or used on its own with a small keyboard and led screen.
